Design and Conceps for Film

Besides being an epic sequel, Blade Runner 2049 is a visually stunning film. It follows an NYPD blade runner who discovers secrets about a previous blade runner by the name of Rick Deckard.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve who was invited to direct the film by Ridley Scott, who liked his work on Sicario. The main visual difference between the original and the sequel is that most visual effects are digital, not miniature and retro-compositing. This in turn allowed for much more dynamic shots of the baron wasteland that is LA.
The Director of photography on this film was the legendary Roger Deakins whom has worked with Villeneuve on other occasions. Dekins is known for his use of lighting. In blade runner, he used a combination of high-contrast lighting and half-subject shots. this created a very dystopian feeling about each shot. Which, in turn is why the film is so loved by Si-Fi fans.
In the end, Villeneuve’s take on the iconic world of blade runner has done nothing more than enhance it, he created an expertly written storyline as well as each character and with the addition of an incredible DP and production designer, blade runner 2049 will go down as one of the great sequels.
